Strange furrows and ridges about 10 meters high and several kilometers were first seen on the lunar surface during the expedition of Apollo 8, when the Americans just circled around our natural satellite. The presence of such anomalies are confirmed and landed. Now, strange folds attracted the attention of specialists who examined photographs, recently received the device Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). And finally a hypothesis that explains their origin

Future plans for the development of the Moon
Moon baza14 January 2004, U.S. President George W. Bush unveiled a new U.S. program for space exploration. One of the stages of the program will return to the moon in the period to 2020. The first result of this program should be a satellite launch Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2008, whose task would be compiling a detailed map of the Moon and search for water in lunar craters.
China also announced its ambitious plans for lunar exploration. In China’s plans is to launch a lunar satellite in 2007 and a landing man on the moon before 2020.
Japan is preparing to launch two satellites to the Moon: Selene in 2007 and the LUNAR-A in 2010. Japan is also preparing a landing man on the moon by 2020 and plans to build a lunar base by 2030.
India is going to launch an artificial satellite Chandrayaan in 2008. India also plans to make a landing on the moon by 2020.
Plans for Russia is to resume the previously frozen project Luna-Glob, start to be produced in 2012.
Also, Germany has set for 2012 launch of its satellite to the moon.
Recent studies of the Moon
ClementineV 1990 Japan launched its research probe to the Moon. Hiten probe entered the lunar orbit, thus Japan has become the third country to carry out a successful launch to the moon. However, due to technical problems, this mission was carried out not in full.
The U.S. space agency NASA launched the Clementine mission in 1994 and Lunar Prospector in 1998.
European Space Agency in 2003, launched to the Moon probe SMART 1, whose main task was to shoot the lunar surface in X-ray and infrared
The history of lunar exploration
Studies of the Moon by the spacecraft began on Sept. 14, 1959 collision with an automatic station Luna 2, the surface of our satellite. Until this moment the only method of exploration of the moon were observing the Moon. The invention of the telescope by Galileo in 1609 was a big step in astronomy in particular observations of the moon. Sam Galileo used his telescope to study mountains and craters on the lunar surface.
moonwalker Since the beginning of the space race between the USSR and the U.S. during the Cold War, the moon was at the center of space programs, both the USSR and the USA. From the U.S. perspective, landing on the moon in 1969 was the culmination of the lunar race. On the other hand, many significant scientific milestones have been passed by the Soviet Union before the United States. For example, the first photos of the back side of the Moon were obtained by the Soviet satellite in 1959.
The first man-made objects that have reached the moon, was the Soviet probe Luna 2. Side of the Moon was photographed station Luna 3 October 7, 1959. After these and other achievements of the USSR in space exploration, U.S. President John F. Kennedy formulated the basic U.S. objectives in outer space, like landing on the moon.
Despite the best efforts of the United States, the Soviet Union for a long time remained a leader in the exploration of the moon. Station Luna 9 made the first soft landing on the surface of our natural satellite. After landing the moon in September gave the first photos of the lunar surface. As a result, the moon landing 9, it was proved the possibility of safe landing on the moon. This was especially important because until now it was believed that the Moon’s surface consists of a layer of dust, which may be a few meters thick, and any object simply be “drowned” in this layer of dust. The first artificial satellite of the moon also was the Soviet probe Luna 10, launched on March 31, 1966.
Apollo 11 American program piloted lunar exploration named Apollo. The first practical result she brought December 24, 1968 with a flyby spacecraft Apollo 8 moon. Mankind first set foot on the moon July 20, 1969. The first person has left its mark on the moon Neil Armstrong was the commander of Apollo 11. The first automated robot on the lunar surface was the Soviet Lunokhod 1, which prilunilsya November 17, 1970. The last person visited the Moon in 1972.
Samples of lunar rocks were brought to Earth as part of the Soviet Luna program of automatic stations Luna 16, 20 and 24. Also, samples of lunar rocks were brought to Earth by astronauts Apollo mission.
Since mid-1960 until mid-1970′s 65 man-made objects have reached the lunar surface. But after the station Luna 26 lunar exploration virtually ceased. The Soviet Union switched its research on Venus, and the U.S. Mars.
Moon illusion
Moon illusion – it is an optical illusion, when the Moon is observed near the horizon appears larger than the moon, the observed high in the sky. Same optical illusion occurs when observing the Sun.
Typical erroneous explanation of this effect is the assumption that the Earth’s atmosphere acts as a kind of lens, which increases apparent diameter of the moon.
Evidence that the observed effect is only an optical illusion can serve as pictures taken with the same camera settings on these photographs the size of the moon will be the same no matter from where the Moon: in the sky or near horizon.
There are several different theories to explain this effect.
According to one of these theories, which is true at this time is considered outdated. visual department of the human brain sees the sky or as a hemisphere than it actually is, but as the plane. When we watch the clouds, birds or planes in the sky, they appear to the observer is less than when they are near the horizon than when they are in over our heads, as apparent size of objects decreases with increasing distance. The moon, in contrast to terrestrial objects, when he is near the horizon is approximately the same apparent angular diameter as and when it is at its zenith, but the human brain is trying to compensate for the distortion of perspective sees the disc of the moon more than he really is. This effect is called the Emmert: When two objects have the same apparent size, but one object located farther from the observer, it seems more.
On the theory of “relative size”, which is currently accepted by most scientists, the visual size of the object of observation depends primarily on the size of other objects that we observe at the same time. Thus, when we see the Moon close to the horizon in our field of vision and get other places, against which, the moon and it seems bigger than it actually is.
Observations of the Moon
Observations LunoyV during the full moon its brightness is -12.6. For comparison, the brightness of the sun -26.8. The disc of the moon when it is closer to the horizon, it seems to the observer more than the size, in fact, it is less than about 1.5% compared to when the moon is at its zenith. The explanation for this phenomenon can be found in the article moon illusion.
Another interesting optical effect is that the Moon seems to us almost entirely white, though in reality, it reflects only 7% of sunlight falling on its surface (some, such as coal). Due to the fact that the moon is the only object in the sky of this size, illuminated by reflected sunlight, and is an optical illusion and the moon seems to us white.
Also, the Moon could be the cause of various atmospheric effects, as well as the Sun. For example, when observing the moon, when between the observer and the Moon is a thin layer of clouds, we can observe the effect of the halo.
System Earth – Moon
System Earth – LunaLuna makes a complete revolution around the Earth within 27.3 days. However, due to rotation of the Earth around the Sun, the observer on Earth can see a cyclic change of lunar phases only once every 29.5 days. The motion of the Moon around the Earth is in the ecliptic plane, but not in the plane of the equator (most natural satellites of other planets rotate in the equatorial plane of their planets).
Tides that we see on Earth, are largely under the influence of the Moon, the Sun has only a small effect on these processes. Tidal processes are the cause of the gradual removal of the Moon from the Earth, which is caused by loss of angular momentum in the Earth – the Moon. The distance between the Earth and the Moon increases by 3.8 meters every century. Also, these processes are responsible for the gradual slowing down the Earth’s rotation around its axis, which increases the length of Earth days in 0.002 seconds in a century.
The system of the Earth – the Moon is considered by some scientists do not like the system Earth – satellite, but as a double planet, because the size and mass of the Moon are sufficiently large. The diameter of the Moon is  3 / 4 the diameter of the Earth, and the mass of the Moon is 1 / 81 Earth masses. As a result, the rotation of the Earth – the Moon is not around the center of the Earth, but around the center of mass of the Earth – the Moon, which is located about 1700 km beneath the surface of the Earth.
Moonlight Atmosphere
Japanese lunar satellite sputnikAtmosfera our very low. One source of the lunar atmosphere are gases that are extracted from the lunar crust, such gases include radon gas. Another source of gases in the atmosphere of the moon are the gases evolved during the bombardment of the lunar surface micrometeorites and solar wind. Because of the weak magnetic and gravitational field of the moon almost all the gases from the atmosphere evaporate into space.
Internal structure
The moon, like Earth, is composed of distinct layers: the crust, mantle and core. This structure is believed to be formed immediately after the formation of the Moon – 4.5 billion years ago. The thickness of the lunar crust is believed to 50 km. In the thickness of the lunar mantle lunnotryaseniya happen, but unlike earthquakes, which are caused by movement of tectonic plates, moonquake caused by the tidal forces of the Earth. The core of the Moon, as well as terrestrial core consists of iron, but its size is significantly lower at 350 km in radius. The average density of the Moon 3.3 g/cm3.
